The grapes for Calancombe Estate Bacchus 2019 are all harvested from a single plot. This is the prime location, growing the best Bacchus grapes in the 23 acre vineyard near Modbury, South Devon.

This English wine has a lovely nose of elderflower and grapefruit with hints of tropical fruit. On the palate it is clean and crisp with lovely gooseberry and elderflower flavours, finished with just a touch of citrus. The perfect English wine for enjoying the perfect English summer.

Bacchus

The colder climate in England gives Bacchus higher acidity and lower yields than when grown elsewhere. English Bacchus wines often fall somewhere between the typical French and New Zealand styles of Sauvignon Blanc, although there are examples at either end of the spectrum.

Olly Shaw, Calancombe Estate

Calancombe’s aim is to: "produce the finest quality sparkling and still white, red and rosé wines, from grapes grown exclusively on our Estate and produced in our purpose built winery."

Winemaker Olly Shaw previously worked in France and New Zealand where he acquired skills and knowledge about the art of viticulture.

Devon, England

Devon's vineyards are situatued in the valleys and lowlands of south and east Devon. Mostly close to the rivers Exe, Teign and Dart.

The growing season is long, with sun and heat starting earlier and lasting longer than in many other English counties. This gives the grapes more time to ripen and more time to hang.

Calancombe Estate

Blessed with a unique microclimate, south-facing slopes and free draining soil, the Calancombe Estate is ideally suited for wine production.

After taking advice from a leading viticulturist, planting of the first parcel of vines commenced in 2013. Total plantings now extend to 23 acres making the Estate the largest in South Devon that produces its own wines and one of the larger estates in the country.

This is a lovely easy drinking bacchus. For a wine that is only 10% ABV it has great depth of flavour with a long juicy finish.

Service was good though the wine was a little overpowering for me too much gooseberry (?) for my liking.
