Very good wine very happy with the purchase
It’s not just about pretty labels, but we do like this one a lot. Plush, blueberry fruited, violet scented Malbec from an unexpected region in California’s central valley. What’s not to like?
The grapes are a blend of Malbec (90%) and Syrah (10%) which are sourced from the northern end of California's long central valley. Malbec here benefits from the cooling influence of San Francisco bay so grapes retain freshness. After fermntation 70% of the Malbec is aged on oak for 4 months giving good integration and subtle oak characteristics. A small percentage of Syrah is blended into the wine before bottling to give some extra structure to this plush red wine.
It is juicy and full bodied, with plenty of blackcurrant and blueberry fruit, velvety tannins and great freshness.
Great with rich and hearty food such as a casserole or veggie chilli con carne.
The United States has a short winemaking history, but what it lacks in age it makes up for with vigour.
It is the 4th biggest wine producer in the world. Every state has some wineries. Good, cool climate styles come from New York state, Oregon and Washington State. Warmer styles are found in California where Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the way.
Malbec is a tale of two worlds - the old and the new. Malbec has become synonomous with Argentinia where the high altitude vineyards produce delicate, floral Malbec.
Yet, as with many things vinous, the grape came from France (where it was known as Côt or Auxxerois). Used in blends, including in Bordeaux, it's best known French expression is in Cahors.
