Sharpham have been producing superb English wines for forty years. Using grapes from carefully selected varieties grown on their sheltered slopes overlooking the River Dart.

Traditional and new world techniques are employed in the winemaking process, which result in a range of distinctive and carefully balanced wines.

The Pinot Noir fruit for this English red wine is carefully selected, part crushed and cold macerated for at least a week prior to the fermentation with the inclusion of some whole bunch and stems.

There is a post fermentation maceration period of at least a week before a partial malolactic fermentation. This wine then spent 3 months in second fill French oak barrels prior to bottling.

The result is a ripe and youthful cool climate English red wine made entirely from Pinot Noir. On the nose it is showing wild strawberry, cherry and a hint of subtle spice. The palate is full flavoured with juicy red berries and broad tannins.

This is drinking well now but it will improve further with time.

Devon, England

Devon's vineyards are situatued in the valleys and lowlands of south and east Devon. Mostly close to the rivers Exe, Teign and Dart.

The growing season is long, with sun and heat starting earlier and lasting longer than in many other English counties. This gives the grapes more time to ripen and more time to hang.

Pinot Noir

When made well, Pinot Noir shines. When young it has delicious aromas of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries.

As the wine ages, it will develop complexity and mystery. It has the capacity to become a gamey style of wine. It will show notes of autumn, truffles and mushrooms, especially when originating from the top vineyards of Burgundy.

2020 pinot noir (Sharpham) - smooth and easy drinking if opened a few hours before / decanted; lots of fruit but not sweet; price (£18.50) compares well to burgundy which is getting rather expensive at £35+
