There have been vines at Sandridge Barton for over 40 years. This idyllic English vineyard is sited close to the estuary of the river Dart where the saltwater keeps the temperature 1 or 2 degrees higher than further inland (reducing the risk of frost) and the breeze ensures a steady air flow.
Much of the vineyard is planted with Madeleine Angevine, originally from the Loire Valley, but which seems very happy in its South Devon home. For their 2021 Estate Selection, the small team of dedicated winemakers at Sharpham used the grapes from the best spot in the vineyard (rather unromantically named 'D' block).
This is a dry and fresh style of English White Wine that brings Devon to your glass. This is produced with 100% free-run juice, creating a highly approachable and juicy style of wine.
The wine is clean and crisp, with great balance. The nose bursts with aromas of green apples and English meadows. On the palate there is a zingy citrussy freshness.
Perfect for an English garden party, or paired with some fresh seafood from the Devon coast.

"If there was ever a summer wine this is it, fresh, bright, crisp and delicious, drink it with fish or seafood or just sip on it’s own, either way it’s a pretty decent white wine."

Duncan Schwab has been making Sharpham wine for over 25 years. He became CEO when they moved to their new home at Sandridge Barton, Stoke Gabriel in 2022.
With over 40 years of history, Sharpham wines are the result of a happy marriage of soil, climate and grape variety. Ducan uses new world and traditional techniques to develop a unique regional character.
Devon's vineyards are situatued in the valleys and lowlands of south and east Devon. Mostly close to the rivers Exe, Teign and Dart.
The growing season is long, with sun and heat starting earlier and lasting longer than in many other English counties. This gives the grapes more time to ripen and more time to hang.
Madeleine Angevine is a white wine grape originally from the Loire Valley in France. The early-ripening grape is a cross between Madeleine Royale and Malingre Précoce grapes that grows well in cooler climates.
Madeleine Angevine makes attractive fruity wines with a flowery nose, similar to an Alsatian Pinot blanc. It is crisp and dry with a fresh acidity. It pairs particularly well with seafoods such as crab and oyster.
