Picpoul is a dry, citrus-led white from southern France. Most examples come from the coastal appellation Picpoul de Pinet, where the Piquepoul Blanc grape produces fresh wines that work particularly well with seafood.
Picpoul is the grape. Picpoul de Pinet is the appellation. The vineyards lie close to the Mediterranean around the Étang de Thau lagoon, and the wines have built their reputation on freshness rather than weight.
Most examples are light to medium-bodied, dry and driven by citrus and green apple, with naturally high acidity. Many bottles also show a faint saline edge, a reflection of the coastal vineyards where the grape is grown.
Picpoul de Pinet is usually best drunk young and well chilled. It is particularly good with oysters, shellfish and simply grilled fish, though it also works well as a clean aperitif.
