The Best Independent Markets in the South West

High streets have had a difficult few decades. Familiar names have disappeared, online shopping has changed the way we buy almost everything, and many town centres are still searching for their place. Yet, for anyone looking to explore the best markets in the South West, independent trading is completely thriving.
Perhaps that's because people are looking for more than simply shopping. They want an experience. They want to meet the person who baked the bread, grew the vegetables, made the cheese, landed the fish, or recommended the wine. They want lunch from an independent street food trader rather than a meal deal, and a reason to spend a morning wandering instead of rushing home.
We are incredibly fortunate to have some outstanding markets in the south west that have stood the test of time. Totnes has held a market since King John granted the town a royal charter in 1206, and more than 800 years later it remains at the heart of the town. South Molton's magnificent Victorian Pannier Market opened in 1864 and continues to be one of Devon's finest food markets.
I spend several days each week behind a market stall, which means I've been lucky enough to get to know these places, and the people who make them, rather well. If you're planning a day out in Devon, Somerset, or Bristol, these are four markets in the South West I'd happily recommend.
Totnes Market
Best for: quirky independence and discovering something unexpected
The historic and eclectic market square at Totnes. If friends ask me where to eat in Totnes, my first piece of advice is always the same: don't make lunch plans before you arrive.
Between the market itself, the independent shops, and the cafés, it's easy to arrive with one thing in mind and leave a few hours later wondering where the morning went.
Like many of the best markets in the south west, the stalls are at their liveliest between 11am and 2pm, when locals and visitors mingle among a wonderfully eclectic mix of traders. On the High Street you'll often find a handful of informal suitcase pitches, adding another layer of discovery to every visit.
I've yet to find better pastries in the South West than those made by Angus and Angélique at Picnic. Around the market you'll also find outstanding bao buns, authentic Persian barbecue, Sri Lankan dosa, Ethiopian curry, gourmet cheese toasties, and Dexter beef burgers.
One of the conversations I have most often starts with, "I've just been to Jonas Fishmongers..." Usually it's followed by a question about what wine would work with the fish they've just bought. Other customers arrive carrying honey from Flora's Honey, amazed that so many different varieties exist, or olive oil from Sail Trade South West, whose oils and spices make the journey from France to Plymouth under sail before reaching Totnes.
One of my favourite moments this summer came during English Wine Week. Angus bought a bottle of Henners Gardner Street Bacchus on Friday. The following day he came back for another because he couldn't stop thinking about it. Those are the moments I enjoy most. You don't just sell something, you find out what people thought of it.

Totnes Market takes place every Friday and Saturday, with an additional market on the third Sunday of each month. Plan your trip with the official Visit Totnes Market Guide, and discover how to find our local wine stall on the Wickham Wine Totnes Hub.
South Molton Pannier Market
Best for: food lovers
Inside the historic Victorian Pannier Market building.Compared to other thriving markets in the south west, South Molton feels very different. Set inside the historic pannier market, it has a rhythm all of its own. The same traders, the same pitches, and regular Thursday and Saturday markets mean customers know exactly where to find their favourite stalls.
I never seem to leave without buying something.
Jo's greengrocer is one of the finest I've come across. Much of the produce comes from local growers, often delivered that very morning. The colours, freshness, and provenance make it almost impossible to walk past without stopping. One morning, the asparagus grower from near Barnstaple dropped off the day's harvest before wandering over to buy a bottle of Loire Sauvignon Blanc to enjoy with it later.
Directly opposite us is The Cheese Stall. Their cheese counter is unlike anything I've seen elsewhere, with an extraordinary range and a regular Cheese of the Month alongside familiar favourites and plenty of discoveries. While customers queue, the conversation often starts before they even reach the counter. By the time they arrive at my stall they're already asking which wine would work with the cheese they've chosen, and occasionally I send them back the other way with a suggestion for something they'd missed.
Nearby you'll find artisan bread from Lucho Bakes, olives, antipasti, and Mediterranean delicacies from Olives+, and local farmers selling locally reared meat, whether you're looking for Dexter beef, venison, chicken, pork, or lamb.
I also learnt very quickly how supportive the traders are. Earlier this year I managed to smash several bottles while setting up. Within seconds people appeared with brushes, sawdust, bins, and eventually a cup of tea. Mercifully, nobody mentioned it again.

Tobacco Factory Market, Bristol
Best for: Bristol's creative spirit

Every Sunday, Tobacco Factory Market brings together one of the most creative and interesting markets in the south west for independent businesses.
The crowd is predominantly local, with plenty of young families, and the atmosphere reflects Bristol's creative side. The yard is filled with pottery, jewellery, paintings, homewares, greeting cards, and work from independent designers and makers.
What I enjoy most is that no two Sundays are quite the same. Raleigh Road hosts a changing line-up of excellent street food, while Tiffins in the Matchbox is a firm favourite for vegetarian Indian food. Around the market you'll also find Five Acre Farm, Pieminister, artisan cakes, coffee, Macaroom, and plenty more besides.
Unlike Totnes and South Molton, the trader line-up changes more regularly, so every visit brings a few new discoveries.

Taunton Independent Market
Best for: making a day of it
Live music and artisan traders at Castle Green.Start the day with a coffee from Silver Fox and ease yourself into the market while the live music gets underway.
As one of the newer calendar markets in the south west, it is held on the second Sunday and the last Saturday of each month from March onwards, Taunton is a place to meet friends, enjoy good food, and spend a few relaxed hours in the town centre.
Come hungry. John the Greek is always worth seeking out, while Funky Anchovy serves superb pizza. PJ's sausage rolls have become something of a destination in their own right, Aaron at Surf & Turf makes outstanding Scotch eggs, and Fran's pickles are perfect for taking home. Later in the day, enjoy a pint of craft ale from Fat Head Brewery or a glass of local cider from Tricky's Cider.
It's the sort of market where a quick visit easily turns into an afternoon.

Why these markets matter
These four markets in the South West are very different, and that's exactly why they're worth visiting.
Totnes is creative, eclectic, and full of surprises. South Molton celebrates outstanding local food and the people who produce it. Tobacco Factory showcases Bristol's independent makers, while Taunton is the sort of place where you can happily spend an afternoon eating, drinking, listening to live music, and catching up with friends.
Standing behind a market stall each week has reminded me that people still value recommendations, conversations, and expertise. Whether it's a cheesemonger suggesting something new, a fishmonger explaining what's just come ashore, a baker talking about the morning's loaf, or someone asking me what to drink with dinner, those conversations are part of what makes markets special.
If you've never visited these markets before, I'd encourage you to make time for them. Better still, visit all four. Each has its own personality, each supports dozens of independent businesses, and each is proof that, despite the challenges facing many high streets, independent markets continue to thrive.
