2016 is widely regarded as one of the great modern Bordeaux vintages. At Haut-Brion, it produced a wine of depth and control rather than excess.

A wet spring was followed by a long, dry summer, with rain arriving at the right moment before harvest. The result was small, concentrated berries with ripe tannin and fresh acidity.

In the glass, the wine is layered and restrained. Blackcurrant, damson and black cherry sit alongside graphite, cigar box and a subtle smoky note that is typical of the estate. There is concentration here, but it is shaped by line and detail rather than weight.

The tannins are fine and persistent. The finish is long, composed and quietly powerful. This is a wine built for long ageing, though decanting will help it show now.

Haut-Brion’s gravel soils, lying over clay and sand, warm quickly and drain freely. This helps explain the consistency of the estate across vintages. In 2016, strict selection kept the blend focused and balanced.

Fermentation is handled parcel by parcel, followed by ageing in French oak barrels. The overall impression is one of proportion. Nothing feels forced.

Food Pairing

A wine of structure and quiet authority calls for equally considered dishes.

  • Roast rib of beef with bone marrow
  • Saddle of lamb with thyme
  • Pigeon or game birds with a reduced jus
  • Slow-cooked short ribs
  • Hard, mature cheeses

If opening now, allow several hours in a decanter.

The Domaine

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest of the Bordeaux First Growths, with records of viticulture on the site dating back to the 16th century. It was included in the 1855 Classification as one of the five Premier Crus, and remains the only estate from outside the Médoc in that top tier.

The vineyard covers just over 50 hectares in Pessac-Léognan, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Deep gravel soils give structure and longevity, while decisions in both vineyard and cellar prioritise balance over display.

Across centuries, Haut-Brion has maintained a reputation for refinement and consistency. The 2016 vintage sits comfortably among its modern classics.

Awards and Scores

Château Haut-Brion 2016 received widespread critical acclaim and is often cited among the leading wines of the vintage. Published scores include:

  • 100 points (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate)
  • 100 points (James Suckling)
  • 99 points (Vinous)
  • 98 to 100 points (Wine Spectator)

This is a bottle for the long haul. If you have space and patience, it should repay both. If you plan to open it young, give it time in a decanter and serve with food.

One of the world's most widely recognized red wine grape varieties. It is grown in nearly every major wine producing country among a diverse spectrum of climates from Australia and British Columbia, Canada to Lebanon's Beqaa Valley.
