Château Pontet-Canet 2025 is a Pauillac shaped by a warm, dry and fast-moving growing season. After a wet April, conditions turned sharply drier, with just 96mm of rain over the following four months. Flowering was early and even, veraison came quickly at the end of July, and harvest began on 2 September, five days earlier than any previous vintage at the estate.
The blend is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. In the cellar, the approach was restrained: no punching down, only occasional saignée, and careful handling throughout to preserve the fruit. Ageing is split between 50% new barrels, 35% concrete amphorae and 15% one-year-old barrels.
Pontet-Canet has been owned by the Tesseron family since 1975 and is farmed organically and biodynamically. Work in the vineyard is done without synthetic chemicals, with a focus on soil health, biodiversity and low-impact methods, including the use of horses and plant-based treatments prepared on the estate.
The château describes the 2025 as concentrated, juicy, expressive, structured and elegant. It looks to be a serious Pontet-Canet, with the freshness and poise needed to balance the depth of fruit from this dry, sunny year.
Cellar for the long term. Likely to start drinking well from the early 2030s and hold for two decades or more.
Best kept for the cellar, but when mature it will suit roast lamb, rib of beef, venison, mushroom dishes and hard cheeses.
