A classic Primitivo from southern Italy. Ripe, full-flavoured and generous, with dark fruit and soft spice carried by a smooth structure.

From the Salento peninsula in Puglia, this comes from vines between 20 and 60 years old, many grown in the traditional bush vine style. Warm, dry conditions bring out depth and ripeness while maintaining enough balance to keep it in check.

In the glass, expect blackberry, plum and black cherry, with a hint of sweet spice and a touch of dried fruit. The palate is rounded and rich, with ripe tannins and enough acidity to keep it from feeling heavy.

A reliable, full-bodied red that works well with robust food.

Food Pairing

Good with grilled meats, pasta with meat or spicy sauces, and hearty stews.

Puglia, Italy

Wines from Puglia tend to be fruity, ripe, full-bodied, red and well priced. Some of the best value wines come from this sunny, dry region. Pair the wines with the traditional foods of the region, which are often based on olives, artichokes, tomatoes, and mushrooms. The best local grapes are Negroamaro, Primitivo, and Bombino Nero.

Primitivo/Zinfandel

Primitivo is a red grape that produces very intense, dark ruby red wines with a spicy and fruity nose. It has flavours of blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice.

It is originally from Croatia, where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski. It found its true home on the eroded limestone plateaus of Puglia, Italy, and it is now grown all over the south of Italy. It also does well in California, where it’s called Zinfandel.

I really enjoyed this wine, smooth, not too acidic, just the right amount of tannins to carry the flavours. Nicely complex and rounded wine for my pallet
