A generous, sun-soaked red from Manduria in southern Puglia. This is classic Primitivo, with plenty of ripe fruit but kept in check by freshness and structure.

Felline sits close to the Gulf of Taranto, where warm days are tempered by coastal influence. The vineyards are rooted in the region’s distinctive red soils, rich in iron, which lend a subtle mineral edge to the wine. Founder Gregory Perrucci has been central to raising the profile of Primitivo in the area, focusing on old vines and careful vineyard work rather than bulk production.

The wine is fermented in stainless steel, then aged for around six months in French oak barrels. This softens the tannins and adds a light layer of spice without overwhelming the fruit.

In the glass, it shows ripe cherry and red berry fruit, with a hint of balsamic and gentle oak. The palate is full and rounded, with soft tannins, bright acidity and a steady, warming finish. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

There’s weight here, but it doesn’t feel heavy. The balance between fruit, acidity and structure keeps it drinkable, rather than tiring.

Food Pairing

Works well with slow-cooked ragù, grilled meats or sausages, and anything tomato-based. Also a good match for aged cheeses.

Puglia, Italy

Wines from Puglia tend to be fruity, ripe, full-bodied, red and well priced. Some of the best value wines come from this sunny, dry region. Pair the wines with the traditional foods of the region, which are often based on olives, artichokes, tomatoes, and mushrooms. The best local grapes are Negroamaro, Primitivo, and Bombino Nero.

Primitivo/Zinfandel

Primitivo is a red grape that produces very intense, dark ruby red wines with a spicy and fruity nose. It has flavours of blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice.

It is originally from Croatia, where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski. It found its true home on the eroded limestone plateaus of Puglia, Italy, and it is now grown all over the south of Italy. It also does well in California, where it’s called Zinfandel.
