Finca Sophenia

Located in the high altitude Tupungato Valley region of Mendoza, this modern winery benefits from a long, cool growing season and strong UV sunlight that helps maximise the aromas and complexity of the resulting grapes.

Tupungato sits at the western extreme of Mendoza right at the foot of the Andes mountains with an elevation of 1,200 meters giving benefit to the vineyards from a much cooler climate, abundant sun, and sharp contrast between day and night temperatures.

In August 2019 the winery achieved the sustainability certification in accordance with the Bodegas de Argentina Sustainability.

Julia Halupczok, Finca Sophenia

"It all begins at the vineyard," says Julia Halupczok, Winemaker at Finca Sophenia. Their vineyards have the perfect combination of soil, climate, and altitude to make balanced wines with excellent fruitiness, freshness and character. "We do honour to these natural qualities with our sustainable practices at the vineyard and winery, working hard to make wines that improve with every season.”

The commitment of Halupczok and her team has been rewarded by major awards and high scores for all the different labels in their portfolio, with many wines having received scores of 90 points and above in recent years.

Roberto Luka and his partner started Finca Sophenia after a successful wine career which culminated in him becoming President of the trade body Wines of Argentina. Sophenia is a port-manteau of two names: his partner's daughter, Sophia and his own daughter, Eugenia.

Their first decision was to try something different and in this spirit their instincts led them to Gualtallary, a region in Tupungato in the Uco Valley that very few knew about at the time and most who did thought that planting a vineyard there was an act of insanity. However, their enthusiasm prevailed over conventional wisdom and after buying a 130-hectare estate spread across land at an altitude of between 3000 and 4000 feet above sea level.
