Les Gravières is one of the most consistent and characterful premier cru sites in Santenay, typically producing wines with more depth than the village level while retaining freshness. This bottling reflects a more restrained, site-led approach.

The 2021 has a bright, lifted profile. Redcurrant and cherry fruit sit alongside a light floral note and a faint stony edge. The palate is medium-bodied and finely balanced, with fresh acidity and subtle tannin giving shape rather than weight. There is concentration here, but it comes through clarity and energy rather than power, finishing dry and savoury.

Vincent Girardin began with just 3 hectares in the 1980s and now farms 14 hectares of owned vineyards, with a further 19 hectares under lease, many of them well sited. The 2021s are among the first vintages to be fully made in house. Under head winemaker Eric Germain, the domaine has moved towards biodynamic farming, earlier picking and a lighter touch in the cellar, with less new oak and earlier racking into older barrels. The aim is clearer expression of site, and the results show freshness, precision and focus.

Food Pairing

Roast chicken, veal, pork with herbs, or mushroom dishes. Also works well with lighter game birds.

Drink now with a short decant, or over the next five to seven years.

Burgundy, France

Burgundy (or Bourgogne in French) is small in size, the Côte d'Or has about 8000 hectares under vine, yet its influence is immense. It is home to some of the best known and most expensive wines in the world. Look in the right places and there is great quality and superb value to be found.

The two major grapes are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though you can find small pockets of well-made Aligoté.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the holy grail grape for many winemakers, it is a difficult mistress, but when made well it shines.

Young Pinot Noir has delicious aromas of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. With age it develops complexity and mystery. Older wines have the capacity to become a gamey style of wine, and the best examples show autumnal notes of truffles, mushrooms, and forest floor.
