Alo Jais Noir 2025 is a powerful expression of 100% Carignan from the wild landscapes of Roussillon's Côtes Catalanes. Sourced from old bush vines growing on poor, low-yielding soils, it captures the concentration and character that this often-overlooked variety can achieve when planted in the right place
Intense aromas of dark berries lead into a generous palate of ripe black fruit, balanced by delicate tannins and a smooth, rounded texture. Despite its richness, the wine retains freshness and purity, allowing the fruit to take centre stage.
The grapes come from old bush vines growing between the Corbières hills and the Mediterranean coast, where naturally low yields produce fruit with exceptional concentration. Winemaker Guillaume Letang discovered these vineyards while exploring one of the most remote corners of Roussillon in search of distinctive old-vine Carignan.
Fermentation took place entirely in stainless steel, preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit rather than masking it with oak. The result is a wine that showcases Carignan's naturally generous character while retaining balance and drinkability.
Long regarded as a workhorse variety, old-vine Carignan has undergone a quiet revival in southern France. Wines like Alo Jais Noir show just how expressive the grape can be when yields are kept low and the focus remains firmly on quality.
Food Pairing
Serve with duck confit, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, grilled sausages or hearty bean and lentil casseroles. Its rich fruit and supple tannins also make it an excellent partner for mature cheeses.

Languedoc-Rousillon, France
The Languedoc is a vast region stretching across much of the south and Mediterranean and is France`s single largest vineyard entity for its Vins de Pays wines.
Within the Languedoc lie several distinctly identified Vins de Pays (including the l`Aude, Gard and Hérault) and many appellations that maintain traditional local blends and styles such as Minervois, Corbières, Pic Saint Loup and Fitou.
Carignan is a relatively unknown variety, often taking a back seat to its more recognisable blending partners - Syrah and Grenache. Despite which it is an important player in southern France and Spain.
When grown with care and not over-cropped, Carignan produces wines of presence, structure, and spice. Common flavours include red berries, savoury spices, and subtle earthiness. Carignan rosés are fresh and energetic.
Julien describes himself as ‘a man on the ground’; always close to the source of his wines and appreciating that this is the key to fantastic wine.

We came across this wine when we had lunch out in a noted restaurant, and loved it. We use Wickhams because of their excellent service and extensive knowledge of great wines.
