Breaky Bottom Cuvée Manja Scott 2019 is a traditional method sparkling wine from Sussex, made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Produced by Peter Hall at his small South Downs vineyard near Lewes, it shows the precision, maturity and understated elegance that have made Breaky Bottom one of England's pioneering sparkling wine producers.
The wine has a fine, persistent mousse and layers of apple, citrus and orchard fruit, alongside notes of almond, brioche and pastry. Richly textured yet fresh and focused, it combines depth and complexity with remarkable balance.
Like all Breaky Bottom cuvées, the wine is named after someone who has played an important role in Peter Hall's life. Manja Scott, a close family friend since the early 1980s, was born in Zagreb into a musical and artistic family. A trained dancer, she spent many years teaching, performing and choreographing in Africa before later establishing herself as a textile designer, painter and printmaker.
The blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier was made using the traditional method and aged extensively before release. The result is a sparkling wine with both freshness and complexity, showing the benefits of time spent maturing on its lees.
Refined and characterful, this is English sparkling wine at its most distinctive, offering maturity, finesse and a clear sense of place.
Food Pairing
Serve as an aperitif or with oysters, smoked salmon, crab, roast chicken or creamy mushroom dishes. It also pairs well with hard cheeses, where the wine's freshness and subtle brioche notes come into their own.

More Information
Sussex, England
Sussex has a warm climate and soil types similar to Champagne. Champagne lies on the 49th parallel north while the Sussex Weald lies on the 51st parallel north. Sussex has many south-facing slopes, which are suitable for growing the grape varieties found in sparkling wine, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
The grapes, most commonly Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot meunier, are used to make several base wines that are assembled together to make Champagne, English Sparkling wine and other classic cuvée wines.
Champagne blends can also include Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Other appelations have rules about which grapes can be included.
Peter was a pioneer of English winemaking, planting his small six-acre vineyard in 1974. In that time he learnt much about growing grapes in a difficult place, "I’ve come to appreciate that the best wine is made in the vineyard. The winemaker’s job is to let good grapes express themselves naturally."
Each year Peter made two cuvées, one from Seyval Blanc and the other from Chardonnay and Pinots. Both where named for close friends.
