A classic southern Sicilian red. Ripe, full-flavoured and built for food, with dark fruit and a lightly savoury edge.

Nero d’Avola, often called “the black grape of Avola”, is Sicily’s best-known red variety. Here it comes from vineyards around Riesi in the south of the island, where warm conditions bring out its depth of flavour while keeping a sense of balance.

In the glass, expect wild plum and black cherry, with a touch of spice and a hint of bitter chocolate. The palate is robust but well-shaped, with brambly fruit, savoury notes and ripe tannins giving it structure.

A reliable, no-nonsense red that works well with hearty food.

Food Pairing

Good with burgers, grilled meats or charred lamb. Also works well with tomato-based dishes or simple pasta.

Nero D'Avola

Nero d'Avola (also known as Calabrese) is one of Italy's most important indigenous grape varieties. Translated as Black of Avola, it is named after the town of Avola in the far south of Sicily.
