A classic expression of Langhe Nebbiolo. Medium-bodied and savoury, with red fruit, floral notes and enough structure to give it shape without becoming severe.

Made from 100% Nebbiolo and aged for around six months in large wooden barrels, this keeps the grape’s characteristic freshness and grip while softening the tannins slightly. The result is a wine that feels open and approachable, while still recognisably Piedmontese.

In the glass, expect red cherry and darker berry fruit, alongside violet notes and a gentle earthy, leathery character that comes with a bit of age and barrel maturation. The palate is balanced and persistent, with a savoury edge running through the finish.

The Casali del Barone range focuses on traditional wines from Piemonte, aiming to express the character of the Langhe and surrounding areas without overcomplicating things.

A good introduction to Nebbiolo for anyone looking beyond the bigger Barolo and Barbaresco names.

Food Pairing

Works well with roast meats, mushroom dishes or northern Italian cooking. Also good with vitello tonnato or chicken dishes with balsamic or herb-led sauces.

Daniele Ress, Casali Del Barone

Daniele Ress is the technical director of Schenk Italian wineries. Working as a "flying winemaker" he has collaborated with the 150 growers that make up the Cantina Vallebelbo Sca agricultural cooperative to create the Casali del Barone range.

Together they have about 500 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the Langhe, on the hills around Santo Stefano Belbo.

Piedmont, Italy

Piedmont is affected by a tug-of-war between two weather systems: the ice cold Alps and the warm Mediterranean temperature. This variation makes the whole area fill up with morning fog that slowly burns off during the day. This means the land higher up on the hills gets more sun. More sun = happy grapes = good wine. It's why Piedmont (or Piemonte) is considered to be Italy's best wine growing region.

Nebbiolo

Often referred to as the queen of black grapes, Nebbiolo is the grape of legendary wines such as Barolo and Barberesco. The name derives from nebia which translates as "fog", due to the morning fog which hangs around the vineyards.

The wines are high in tannins, repaying the patient with their ageworthyness. With time they will often develop flavours of violets, herbs, dark fruit and truffles.
