A Savagnin from the Jura, in the Côtes du Jura appellation, made by blending two approaches to ageing the grape. Most of the wine is kept fresh in topped-up barrels, while a portion is aged in the traditional Jura way under a natural yeast veil. The result keeps the brightness of Savagnin but adds the savoury, nutty notes the region is known for.
Produced by Domaine de Sainte Marie, a Jura estate that specialises in Savagnin. This wine combines two different ways of handling the grape.
Most of the wine is matured in topped-up barrels, where the casks are regularly refilled to keep the wine fresh and protected from air. A smaller portion is aged without topping up, allowing a thin layer of yeast to form on the surface of the wine. This traditional Jura method slowly develops the savoury, nutty character associated with the region’s classic whites.
Blending the two keeps the wine balanced. The topped-up Savagnin brings freshness and structure, while the traditionally aged portion adds depth.
Golden in colour with aromas of hazelnut, apple skin and light spice. The palate shows baked apple, walnut and gentle savoury notes, with fresh acidity keeping the wine lively.
The wine was recognised in the Guide Hachette des Vins 2025, receiving two stars (“Vin remarquable”) and a Coup de Cœur, the guide’s mark for a particularly successful wine.

Comté or other firm Alpine cheeses are the classic match. Also good with roast chicken, creamy poultry dishes or mushrooms.

Jura
Don't be fooled by its size, good things come in small packages. Although Jura vineyards stretch over just 50 miles, they are no less rich or varied.
Nestled against the Jura Mountains are seven Appellations. Arbois (the oldest appellation in France), Côtes du Jura, L'Etoile, Château-Chalon, Macvin du Jura, Crémant du Jura and Marc du Jura. The grape varieties are: Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir.
Small-berried and thick-skinned, Savagnin has been cultivated in France for at least 900 years. It is also known as Traminer, as well as ‘Heida’ in Switzerland, although the grape’s birthplace is unclear.
It is best known as the signature grape of Jura. It ripens late, though it can produces dry white wines with good acidity. In Jura, it typically has a citrus and floral character, though more tropical examples can be found.
Domaine de Sainte Marie is a family estate in the Jura near Arlay, with a vine-growing history stretching back more than two centuries.
Today Bertrand and Gaëtan de Sainte Marie focus on Savagnin, the region’s signature grape. Their wines show the Jura’s distinctive character: structured, savoury and shaped by limestone soils and a cool alpine-influenced climate.
