Clos Village is one of the more solid and traditionally styled sites in Gevrey-Chambertin, and this bottling reflects that. It sits firmly in the sturdier end of the appellation, with more depth and grip than En Champs, but still plenty of balance.

The 2021 shows darker fruit than the En Champs, leaning towards black cherry and damson, with a savoury, slightly earthy note and a touch of spice. The palate is structured and direct, with firm but well-managed tannins and fresh acidity keeping the wine focused. There is nothing flashy here, but it has weight, shape and a sense of place. A wine that rewards time and food rather than casual sipping.

The domaine covers 8.5 hectares and was founded in 1920. It is now run by Damien Livera, who took over in 2007. Before that, much of the fruit from old vines planted in the 1950s and 60s was sold to the large Beaune négociants. Since then, Damien has rebuilt the estate with lower yields, careful vineyard work, no herbicides, manual soil management and a new winery. The step up in quality over the last fifteen years has been clear.

Food Pairing

Roast or slow-cooked lamb, beef, game birds, or richer mushroom dishes. Also good with firm, aged cheeses.

Drink now with decanting, or over the next six to eight years.

Burgundy, France

Burgundy (or Bourgogne in French) is small in size, the Côte d'Or has about 8000 hectares under vine, yet its influence is immense. It is home to some of the best known and most expensive wines in the world. Look in the right places and there is great quality and superb value to be found.

The two major grapes are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though you can find small pockets of well-made Aligoté.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the holy grail grape for many winemakers, it is a difficult mistress, but when made well it shines.

Young Pinot Noir has delicious aromas of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. With age it develops complexity and mystery. Older wines have the capacity to become a gamey style of wine, and the best examples show autumnal notes of truffles, mushrooms, and forest floor.
