A village Gevrey from a well-sited parcel just below the premiers crus, on classic limestone soils. This is Pinot Noir that leans towards structure and restraint rather than sweetness or gloss.
The 2021 has a cool, clear profile. Red cherry and raspberry fruit, a light savoury edge and a faint note of woodland underneath. The palate is firm and linear, with fine but present tannin and fresh acidity giving shape and length. Not a showy wine, but balanced, well judged and unmistakably Gevrey-Chambertin. It benefits from air and is better suited to the table than casual drinking.
The domaine covers 8.5 hectares and was founded in 1920. It is now run by Damien Livera, who took over in 2007. Before that point, much of the fruit from their old vines, planted in the 1950s and 60s, was sold to the large Beaune négociants. Damien has since rebuilt the estate from the ground up, focusing on low yields, careful vineyard work, no herbicides and hands-on farming, alongside a new winery. The improvement in quality since then has been clear and consistent.
Food Pairing Roast chicken or guinea fowl, pork with herbs, mushroom dishes, or grilled lamb. Works well with hard, nutty cheeses.
Drink now with a decant, or over the next five to seven years.

Burgundy, France
Burgundy (or Bourgogne in French) is small in size, the Côte d'Or has about 8000 hectares under vine, yet its influence is immense. It is home to some of the best known and most expensive wines in the world. Look in the right places and there is great quality and superb value to be found.
The two major grapes are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though you can find small pockets of well-made Aligoté.
Pinot Noir is the holy grail grape for many winemakers, it is a difficult mistress, but when made well it shines.
Young Pinot Noir has delicious aromas of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. With age it develops complexity and mystery. Older wines have the capacity to become a gamey style of wine, and the best examples show autumnal notes of truffles, mushrooms, and forest floor.
