Florent Rouve's Arbois Savagnin is a wonderful introduction to one of France's most distinctive white grape varieties. Grown in the Jura, where Savagnin has been cultivated for centuries, it combines bright freshness with subtle nutty complexity and an unmistakable mineral edge.

Orchard fruit, citrus and delicate floral aromas lead into a focused palate that is crisp rather than broad, finishing with a gentle saline note and the faint nuttiness that makes Savagnin so compelling. Rich enough to satisfy, yet driven by lively acidity, it is a wine that rewards slow drinking.

Florent Rouve represents a new generation of Jura winemakers. After taking over the renowned Jean Rijckaert estate, he has continued its reputation for producing wines that express their origin with precision and restraint. His approach is deliberately hands-off, allowing the vineyards and the character of each grape variety to take centre stage.

Unlike the region's famous Vin Jaune, which is matured for many years under a veil of yeast, this is an ouillé Savagnin. The barrels are topped up throughout ageing, preserving the grape's vibrant fruit while allowing its naturally savoury character to develop. The result is a style that is fresh and mineral rather than overtly oxidative, making it an excellent first step into the wines of the Jura.

Arbois was France's first Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, recognised in 1936, and remains the historic heart of Jura wine. Limestone-rich soils and a cool continental climate give Savagnin the tension and precision for which it is prized, producing wines that are unlike anything else in France.

Food Pairing

Excellent with Comté, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, trout, scallops or creamy sauces. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring walnuts or morels, whose earthy flavours complement Savagnin's savoury character.

Jura

Don't be fooled by its size, good things come in small packages. Although Jura vineyards stretch over just 50 miles, they are no less rich or varied.

Nestled against the Jura Mountains are seven Appellations. Arbois (the oldest appellation in France), Côtes du Jura, L'Etoile, Château-Chalon, Macvin du Jura, Crémant du Jura and Marc du Jura. The grape varieties are: Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir.

Savagnin

Small-berried and thick-skinned, Savagnin has been cultivated in France for at least 900 years. It is also known as Traminer, as well as ‘Heida’ in Switzerland, although the grape’s birthplace is unclear.

It is best known as the signature grape of Jura. It ripens late, though it can produces dry white wines with good acidity. In Jura, it typically has a citrus and floral character, though more tropical examples can be found.
