Marbury Chardonnay 2023 comes from Essex's Crouch Valley, one of England's leading regions for still wine. Made by Charlie Holland, formerly of Gusbourne, it shows just how well Chardonnay can perform in England's warmest and driest vineyard areas.
Aromas of ripe citrus, apple blossom and orchard fruit are joined by notes of brioche, fennel seed and toasted hazelnut. The palate has real concentration but remains fresh and balanced, with citrus and stone fruit flavours carried by a mineral edge through the finish.
The vineyards overlook the Crouch estuary, where London Clay soils help provide consistent water supply throughout the growing season. A cool, wet spring was followed by warmer weather later in the year, allowing the fruit to ripen fully while retaining freshness. The grapes were harvested in late October.
After whole-bunch pressing, the wine was fermented in French oak barrels and aged on its lees for around ten months. Only a small proportion of new oak was used, giving texture and complexity without dominating the fruit.
This is a confident, modern English Chardonnay, combining ripe fruit, freshness and subtle oak influence. It has the depth and structure to develop over the next few years, but is already drinking very well.
Food Pairing
Serve with roast chicken, lobster, creamy mushroom dishes or pork with apple. It also works well with richer fish dishes and mature hard cheeses.

More Information
Essex, England
Essex may be the best site for still wine grapes in England. The vineyards are concentrated in the Crouch Valley which is one of the driest and warmest parts of the UK.
Many of the vineyard sell their grapes rather than make their own wines, so often you may not be aware that the wine you are drinking is using grapes from Essex.
One of the world’s most popular grapes, Chardonnay is made in a wide range of styles from lean, sparkling Blanc de Blancs to rich, creamy white wines aged in oak.
Depending on how ripe the grapes get, the flavour ranges from crisp, clean citrus and green apple, to ripe peaches and tropical fruit. Notable Chardonnays can be found in France, California, Australia, England, and beyond.
