Established in 1967 by Maurice Grignon, the family winemaking and trading company originally specialised in the production and sale of wine-making materials. In 1992 the company was sold and became an Association of Cooperatives and started producing wines from Languedoc- Roussillon.
The name Foncalieu is made up of letters of villages in the region of l`Aude - Fonties de Aude, Capendu - ALzonne - Montolieu.
Since 2007, Foncalieu have been committed to sustainable development. Their goal is to ensure the quality of the product whilst respecting the terroir and maintaining mutually beneficial relations with the land.
They seek to preserve their vineyards by supporting members to implement sustainable practices, such as protecting biodiversity, adopting drip irrigation and, installing grass strips.
For example, as part of their commitment to evironmetally friendly cultivation a new method to disrupt the mating of grape worms helped to reduce spraying across 1,100 hectares of vines.
Significant efforts are being made to move vineyards to organic production: 31 hectares are AB certified and a further 128 hectares are in conversion.
