Château La Prade is one of the hidden gems of Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, the smallest of Bordeaux's recognised appellations. The estate was purchased by Nicolas Thienpont in 2000 and has since become one of the leading wines of the region, demonstrating what can be achieved on outstanding limestone soils away from Bordeaux's more famous addresses.
The vineyard occupies an excellent site in Saint-Cibard, with parcels spread across limestone plateaux and clay-limestone slopes. Merlot dominates the blend, supported by Cabernet Franc, producing wines with generous fruit, freshness and a distinctive mineral character derived from the limestone-rich terroir.
La Prade has earned a loyal following among those who look beyond classifications and appellation prestige. The focus here is on careful viticulture, low yields and thoughtful winemaking, resulting in wines that consistently offer more complexity and character than their modest price might suggest.
For those willing to explore beyond the better-known names of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, La Prade is a reminder that some of Bordeaux's most rewarding discoveries are found in its overlooked corners. It combines the experience and attention to detail associated with the Thienpont family with a terroir that continues to offer remarkable value.
Food Pairing
A versatile claret that pairs well with roast lamb, pork, duck and slow-cooked beef dishes. Its freshness and supple tannins also make it an excellent partner for charcuterie and hard cheeses.
