This Montagny comes from hillside vineyards around Montagny-lès-Buxy and is a good example of what the appellation does well when it’s handled with care. Chardonnay with shape and texture, but without excess.

The wine is vinified and aged in older French oak barrels, which adds weight and a gentle creaminess without pushing the oak to the front. Aromatically there’s ripe stone fruit, a hint of dried apricot and a light vanilla note, backed up by a clean mineral line. On the palate it’s rounded and textured, with toasty, buttery notes kept in check by fresh acidity and a long, balanced finish.

The Berthenet family have been growing vines here for four centuries, and today the estate works with a clear focus on sustainability, using minimal treatments clearly and thoughtfully. It shows in the wine, which feels composed rather than overworked.

Food Pairing

This is well suited to shellfish and seafood, particularly scallops, prawns or crab, where the texture of the wine mirrors the dish. It also works nicely with richer fish or anything with a light butter or cream-based sauce, where the oak influence feels natural rather than heavy.

Chardonnay

One of the world’s most popular grapes, Chardonnay is made in a wide range of styles from lean, sparkling Blanc de Blancs to rich, creamy white wines aged in oak.

Depending on how ripe the grapes get, the flavour ranges from crisp, clean citrus and green apple, to ripe peaches and tropical fruit. Notable Chardonnays can be found in France, California, Australia, England, and beyond.

Burgundy, France

Burgundy (or Bourgogne in French) is small in size, the Côte d'Or has about 8000 hectares under vine, yet its influence is immense. It is home to some of the best known and most expensive wines in the world. Look in the right places and there is great quality and superb value to be found.

The two major grapes are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, though you can find small pockets of well-made Aligoté.
