A classic Ribera del Duero Crianza made from Tempranillo grown at altitude in the heart of the region. This is a step up in weight and structure, with oak playing a clear but measured role.

Rippa Dorii is part of the Ontañón family, working with vineyards around Fuentecén at around 900 metres above sea level. Conditions here are harsh, with hot summers, cold winters and poor soils, which helps produce concentrated fruit with natural freshness.

The wine is made from 100% Tempranillo (Tinta del País) and aged for around 12 months in a mix of French and American oak. This brings both structure and a layer of spice, while keeping the fruit at the centre.

In the glass, it shows dark berry fruit, with notes of blackberry and blueberry alongside vanilla, nutmeg and a touch of liquorice. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long, steady finish.

There is weight and depth here, but also balance. The oak is present without dominating, giving a more traditional Crianza feel rather than something overly polished.

Food Pairing

Best with grilled or roasted red meats, lamb, or slow-cooked dishes. Also works well with chorizo-based recipes and hard, aged cheeses.

Castilla y Leon, located in the northwest of Spain, is one of the nation’s most important winemaking regions. There are nine denominacions de origen (DOs) located in Castilla y Leon, including Rueda, Toro and Ribera del Duero.

Viticulture has been an important part of the local economy for nearly 2,000 years, with wine production in the region even pre-dating the arrival of the Romans.

Tempranillo

Tempranillo has been grown on the Iberian Peninsula since the time of Phoenician settlements which date back to 500BC. An early ripening variety its name is the diminutive of the Spanish temprano (early).

It thrives on chalky soils and is found predominantly in the Spanish regions of Ribera del Duero and Rioja. In Portugal it is known as Tinto Roriz. When vinified alone it has flavours of strawberries and plums.
