The pressure inside a bottle of Champagne can be as high as 90 pounds per square inch (psi), which is about three times the pressure inside an average car tyre. This is because the carbon dioxide produced during the secondary fermentation is trapped inside the bottle, creating the wine's signature bubbles.

The traditional wire cage used to secure the cork in place is called a "muselet", it takes six half-twists to secure it properly.

The valleys geology is sometimes hard marls and limestones which make exceptional Chardonnay, and sometimes sands which are better for Pinot Meunier.
