'Old School' Syrah is an homage to the savoury, wild yet elegant wines of South Africa.
Wild yeast fermentation, low yields and ageing in large French oak foudre are what defines this savoury and appealing Syrah. It is full yet elegant with bramble fruits and some earth and meaty aromas. The palate is structured and elegant with fine tannins and a refreshing natural acidity.
Ideal with spicy dishes such as South African Bobotie, or rich Mediterranean dishes.
The grapes for False Bay 'Old School' Syrah stem primarily from two vineyards in Stellenbosch. The attraction to these coastal vineyards is the cooler temperatures and low yields of small, naturally balanced and concentrated berries.
The winemaker is the talented young Nadia Barnard.
The grapes are hand harvested, fermented spontaneously with wild yeast (a small portion whole-bunch) and then raised in large wooden casks (or 'foudre' in French). There are no other additions other than sulphur (as a preservative).
False Bay wines are sustainably farmed, hand picked, naturally crafted and cask aged.
A red grape variety that is widely planted around the world, particularly in southern France, South Africa and Australia. Typically wines are full-bodied and deeply coloured.
Generally called Syrah in the old world, or Shiraz in the new. It produces wines which are typically high in tannins and acidity, and can exhibit a range of flavors and aromas, including blackberry, black pepper, smoke, and leather.
JD was destined to be a winemaker. Whilst pregnant, his mother helped in the family winery, enriching JDs formative senses. His earliest memories are of the “floral aromas in the winery while the fermentations were happening”. JD always wanted to be a winemaker and it all came so naturally whilst helping his father in their Paarl winery.
