This South African red wine is made from beautifully ripened Merlot grapes, sourced from long established Western Cape vineyards. This is a bright and juicy Merlot with an attractively soft, creamy, chocolatey nose and a palate bathed in dusky spice. Lush, ripe and deep in hue, this is a plump and sensuous Merlot with flavours of hedgerow fruits and a fine, gently leafy finish.

Merlot grapes are sourced from long standing vineyards on the Swartland/Wellington borders and also the Breede River Valley. Low rainfall, warm weather, mainly decomposed granite soils and low trellised vines all adds really interesting complexity to the final wine.

Grapes are picked in mid-March, destemmed and placed in open top fermenters. Pigeage is carried out four times daily (whilst up to half of the sugar is fermented), then only twice daily to the end of fermentation - this is a soft delicate way of wetting the cap and aerating the wine. Malolactic fermentation follows before the wine is left on its lees to extract extra depth and soft tannins. A touch of elegance is achieved by using a modest amount (10%) of oak.

Pair with grilled lamb, pasta with a tomato-based sauce, chorizo and butterbean stew, spicy sausages and mash.

South Africa

South African wine has a history dating back to 1659 with the first bottle being produced in Cape Town by its founder and governor Jan van Riebeeck.

South Africa is located at the tip of Africa with its wine regions located near the coastal influences of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These regions have a mostly Mediterranean climate that is marked by intense sunlight and dry heat.

JD Roussouw, Boutinot South Africa

JD was destined to be a winemaker. Whilst pregnant, his mother helped in the family winery, enriching JDs formative senses. His earliest memories are of the “floral aromas in the winery while the fermentations were happening”. JD always wanted to be a winemaker and it all came so naturally whilst helping his father in their Paarl winery.

Merlot

"If anyone orders merlot, I’m leaving. I am not drinking any f*&!ing merlot".

Miles view (from the film Sideways) is not shared by everyone, Merlot is loved by many for it's boisterous black cherry flavours, supple tannins, and chocolatey finish. It is a component of some of the worlds finest wines.
