Chénas was the favourite wine of Louis XIII, king of France. It is the rarest of the ten Beaujolais Crus with just 240 hectares under vine.

Located in the north of Chénas "Au Bois Retour" is a small vineyard which has produced an elegant and generous wine. It is silky with a mineral salinity. These small black Gamay grapes express notes of black fruit, peony and spices with beautifully integrated tannins.

The 2020 vintage has produced wines which are concentrated and harmonious between color, body, roundness and aromas of ripe red fruits.

Once upon a time in Beaujolais an ancient family of winemakers wanted to make wines which speak of their place. The Piron family, headed by Dominique Piron, purchased the historical old church of Saint-Pierre de Corcelles and a great and rich diversity of vineyards in Morgon, Chénas and Régnié. Clos du Vieux Bourg traces it's wines from ancient history to the wines of tomorrow.

Gamay

Gamay is a thin, delicate purple-black skinned grape which is cylindrical and compact, surrounded by flat, fairly even-edged leaves.

Although granite soils seem to be its soil of choice, the variety is good at adapting. Half of the 30,000 hectares of Gamay planted worldwide are in the Beaujolais region of France, where it covers 98% of the areas that produce Beaujolais wine.

Beaujolais, France

The hilly Beaujolais vineyards stretch out from north to south over 55km, bordered to the west by the Massif Central, and to the east by the Saone river.

Beaujolais vineyards are emblematic in the French national landscape, but are still teeming with secrets to be unearthed. The region has a constent sense of welcome and sharing. Sculpted over centuries it is personified by its 12 AOCs.

Dominique Piron, Clos Du Vieux Bourg

Dominique declared his first vintage in 1971 and, in 1987, established the highly successful Maison Piron. While he sold Maison Piron in 2020, he still owns the historic family vineyards in Morgon. Dominique and his wife purchased the old church of Saint-Pierre de Corcelles to house the Clos du Vieux Bourg winery. They have added further vineyards in Morgon, Chénas and Régnié.
