Which are the top wines of 2024, those most often purchased and enjoyed by our customers?

Given our expertise in French and English wines, it’s no surprise that the majority of our 2024 top sellers hail from these countries. France claimed seven of the top ten spots showcasing the incredible variety and depth the country continues to offer. Meanwhile, England’s commitment to quality in winemaking sees local winemaker Sandridge Barton (formerly Sharpham Wine) placed second, highlighting the growing recognition of English wine on the global stage.

All of the wines embody the perfect balance of craftsmanship, sustainability, and exceptional taste that we're always looking for.

So, here are our ten top wines of 2024, as chosen by you.

1. Beaujolais Nouveau, Domaine bel Avenir

We're known for our love of all things Beaujolais and the third Thursday in November is our favourite day of the year. Beaujolais Nouveau Day is our first chance to taste the most recent vintage (and it maybe the one day it's acceptable to drink red wine for breakfast).

Customers the length and breadth of the country rely on us to bring back the Beaujolais so the party can begin!

We have worked with Cecile and Alain Dardanelli at Domaine bel Avenir for several years and their Beaujolais Nouveau is always best in class. Cheers to another year on the top spot.

2. Sharpham Dart Valley Reserve

English wine has come of age since Maurice Ash planted the first vines in Devon's Dart Valley over forty years ago. The changing climate has brought improvements and we can now reliably ripen grapes for delicious still wines.

At the new Sandridge Barton winery Duncan Schwab and his team have mastered the art of making distinctly Devonian wines with the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. Dart Valley Reserve is an off-dry style that can be enjoyed with food or simply as an aperitif, and it's our customers favourite white wine.

3. Morgon "Cinque Terre", Clos du Vieux Bourg

Winemaker Dominique Piron follows in the footsteps of 12 previous generations. With more than 500 years experience it no surprise the Piron family have nailed this.

If I could only drink one wine for the rest of my life, Morgon "Cinque Terre" would be the one. It's not that it is the best wine for every situation, but it is a wine that will work in any situation. Cold outside? Crack open a bottle whilst sitting by the fire with a book. Warm outside? Slightly chilled, this will fit the bill. Sunday roast? Morgon has the complexity to be a great partner. Quick weekday supper? Morgon has the deftness of fruit to pair with simple dishes like pasta or pizza.

As one five star review said: "A lot of wine for the price!"

4. Picpoul de Pinet "Soleil", Florensac

The world can be divided in two types of people: those who have tried Picpoul de Pinet and love it, and those who have yet to try Picpoul de Pinet.

With it's distinctive bottle Picpoul has become a modern classic. It is reliably fresh and crisp with - thanks to the vineyards proximity to the Mediterranean - a lovely lick of sea salt on the finish. This makes it a great partner to fresh fish and seafood (although it's equally delightful enjoyed by itself).

Picpoul de Pinet "Soleil" has all the hallmarks of truly excellent Picpoul, a citrus lime note lends weight to the palate and puts this in a class of its own. It's small wonder that it's made it to number four in our list of the top wines of 2024.

5. Prosecco Extra Dry, Filare Italia

All prosecco is made equal, though some are more equal than others. Filare Italia Prosecco Extra Dry is made by Filare Italia whose vineyards are located in Friuli, the lowland that is found between Codroipo and San Daniele. Thanks to their position East of the Tagliamento river the grapes have an alluring, delicate aroma that express the best of Italian wine culture.

A customer favourite and also a firm favourite of Mrs F-W. From the attractive label to the effervescence within, the elegance and finesse are clear to all.

6. Peculiar Mr Pat Merlot

Received wisdom says that labels featuring animals outsell all other designs. And so it is with wine number six.

Peculiar Mr Pat Merlot honours the story of Patrick the Wombat. Pat arrived at Ballarat Wildlife Park in Australia after his Mum was hit by a car in 1987. He lived to 31, making him the oldest known Bare-nosed Wombat in captivity and exceeding his normal life expectancy by more than a decade. He greeted visitors to the park sitting in his blue wheelbarrow, with his gentle nature, and his “bucky-toothed” smile.

Like Pat, the warm, welcoming and gentle nature of this single varietal Merlot have won it a place in our customers hearts.

7. Château Bechereau Lalande de Pomerol

No list of the top wines of 2024 would be complete without a top-drawer Claret. When it comes to value if it's not the right bank, then it's the wrong bank.

A family business since the 18th Century, Château Béchereau has vineyards in three appellations of Bordeaux's Right Bank around the area of Libourne. Over generations they have made consistently high quality wines beloved by Bordeaux drinkers around the world.

8. Côtes Salines, Famille Gueguen

Céline Gueguen has a long heritage in Chablis. Since the 16th century her family has worked the vineyards around the city of Auxerre; her father is the renowned winemaker Jean-Marc Brocard. Together with husband Frédéric, she created Famille Gueguen in 2013. Their vineyards cover appellations from Petit Chablis through Chablis, to Premier Cru, and Grand Cru Chablis.

Côtes Salines comes from just outside the appellation boundaries - and therefore must be labelled as Bourgogne Chardonnay. This is Chablis in all but name and, although it's number eight in our top wines of 2024, we'll try and keep that our little secret.

9. Crazy Tropez, Provence Rosé

Once regarded only for summer, rosé has become a year-round staple. It is as enjoyable paired with robust autumnal dishes as it is sipped on the terrace in summer in Saint Tropez.

And, what better wine to showcase the glorious French Rivera than Crazy Tropez? Made by Saint Tropez stalwart Grégoire Chaix who transformed Le Bar du Port into the place du jour. His expertise in crafting, delicious, irresistible and fashionably pale pinks leaves us powerless to resist them.

10. Beaujolais Blanc "Pierres Dorées", Famille Descombe

The last of our top wines of 2024 is a white from the limestone hills in the west of Beaujolais. As a region it's best known for light, fruity reds, but 5% of the production is white, labelled Beaujolais Blanc. Due to the low volumes these wines rarely leave France.

I first tried Beaujolais Blanc "Pierres Dorées" in Paris. I knew immediately this was a wine we had to add to our portfolio and I'm pleased that customers love it too. Being geographically close to Burgundy there are similarities to the wines of the Mâconnais and Chalonnaise, but Beaujolais blanc is stunning value by comparison. The quality of the fruit shines through and the wine-making (half of the wine is fermented in concrete eggs) raises this to a new level.
